A well-focused and true-to-life 19th century image is presented. Although not formally named, the ballplayer depicted might be identified by a succinct pencil notation on the reverse that reads, simply, "Taylor." His team name is likewise somewhat mysterious, with "PIONEERS" being perhaps the best guess with respect to his shirtfront lettering. Studio attribution ("W. I. Williams & Co., Photographers, 914 Market Street, In Baldwin Hotel Block, San Francisco, Cal.") is imprinted on the back. A small stain is evident at the upper left in the photo, and the mount's gold edges are intact except around the corners where traces of wear are seen. The back exhibits a few spots of rubbing and small areas of light staining on reverse as well. Measures 4-1/4" x 6-3/8"; EX/MT presentation quality.
