Actually, this collection of early Spalding Guides features only three volumes - those of 1881, 1882 and 1887. The fourth guide in this group is in fact an 1884 Eastern League Guide. Its dimensions and its textual length approximates those of standard Spalding Guides and, for that matter, its cover graphics replicate those of Spalding's, but this publication was headed by J. D. Shibe. Composed of such teams as the Newark Domestics, Wilmington Quicksteps, and Reading Actives, the Eastern League of 1884 evidently commanded a wide following. This 1884 Guide approaches EX condition. As for the standard Spalding Guides, all are brittle at the spine and somewhat likewise about the edges, but the covers of all are crease-free and clean. The cover is detached on the 1881 volume; 1882 is about VG/EX; and the back cover is missing on the 1887 Guide.
