Presented is an extremely rare and important Chicago Photographic Studios cabinet featuring the 1882 Providence Grays. The Grays were managed by the legendary Harry Wright, and the squad featured three more future Hall of Famers: Harry’s brother George Wright, John Ward and Hoss Radbourn. The great Joe Start and Vince Nava are also pictured. Nava, whose mother was Mexican, is generally considered to have been the first Hispanic professional baseball player, and images of him are extremely scarce. In all, 12 members of the team are pictured in their uniforms with a bat, a ball and a few hats sitting at their feet for good measure. Radbourn and Ward, winning 52 games between them, led the Grays to a respectable second-place finish in the National League. The 3-7/8" x 5-3/4" photo component is in clear, generally Excellent to Mint condition, and is much nicer than normally encountered. The mount concedes standard wear at its corners and edges, and the reverse carries a printed text advertisement for the photographer.
