A perfect counterpart to the adjacent Black Stocking Nine pairing, this cabinet version offers a less enthused participant but a far more intriguing uniform style. Not only do the jersey top and newfangled bloomer-ish pants feature those eponymous, flamboyant polka dots, but Virginia Brights’ sponsorship is attractively emblazoned across the jersey in initials form, "V B." As for our team ambassador, she seems, well, kind of bored. And her unorthodox pose—right hand in front of her forehead, left hand by her waist—suggests little correlation with baseball per se, resembling instead a magician lifting a rabbit from a hat or (forgive the anachronism) a zombie dancer in Michael Jackson’s "Thriller" video. But enough about Ms. "NO. 4," as this particular subject is identified in a white-lettered caption. Turning to its technical description, the 5" x 7-1/2" cabinet demonstrates impeccable image clarity and contrast, with the sepia photo nicely preserved in EX/MT condition, its surface glowing and its perimeter sharply defined. The sturdy, fully intact mount is creamy-toned with consistent general wear/soiling, including two white vintage repairs in the left margin, and a sealed surface crease in the top right corner. These condition anomalies are somewhat routine in light of the piece’s age and rarity—and not dramatically unappealing either, managing to imbue a certain period charm to complement the decidedly quaint polka-dot threads.
