The esteemed map-making firm Rand McNally doesn’t crop up often in the world of baseball memorabilia, but here we have a gorgeously preserved 16-page schedule whose back cover carries the fine-print copyright line, "Rand, McNally & Co., Printers, Chicago." Of course, it’s Chicago White Stockings megastar Cap Anson who actually takes top billing, his engraved portrait showcased front and center to lure the attention of passengers on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. Player/manager Anson would pace the National League in batting average (.344) and RBI (84) that ’88 season, though his team ultimately finished second behind the New York Giants. The 2-1/2" x 5-1/4" booklet is a crisp, untoned, fully intact NM blazer. For those die-hard condition sticklers, we note the subtlest of small, faint wrinkles near the binding staples and on the lower-left corner of the reverse, but it is truly hard to imagine a finer exemplar existing anywhere. Indeed, its overall rigidity suggests that no one ever used or opened this copy; rather, it remained safely in its closed state for the past 124 years. Also worth mention is a halcyon Gilded Age advertisement on the inside back cover, which reads, "Vestibuled trains with Pullman sleepers, Parlor cars, dining cars and coaches are run daily between Chicago, Milwaukee, La Crosse, St. Paul and Minneapolis via the Fast Mail Line of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul R’y."
