Soaring display appeal! This elaborate framed piece features the imaginatively dramatic backdrop of a photographic matte depicting the original Kitty Hawk flight. Contained within its borders are: 1) A 1/2" x 3/4" section of muslin fabric from the historic "Wright Flyer"; 2) A 3" x 8-1/4" bank check drawn on July 31, 1917, from the Winters National Bank of Dayton, OH, in the amount of $85.05, and featuring a beautiful fountain-pen "9-10" signature, "Orville Wright" (crisp EX/MT condition w/filing folds, typical cancellations and upper-left ink marks); 3) A plaque reading, "FIRST FLIGHT - An actual section of fabric from the original 'Wright Flyer' flown on December 17, 1903 along with a genuine signature by Orville Wright on his letter." Framed to overall dimensions of 22" x 18".

Accompanied by a color photocopy of period provenance picturing the larger section of fabric from which this swatch was cut, with the notation, "Fabric from Wright Brothers 'Kitty Hawk' Harvey D. Geyer 3/2/51" below a typewritten description "All of the fabric for covering the original Kitty Hawk Plane was muslin, purchased from Hunter & Hardy Dry Good Store, E. Third Street, Dayton, Ohio, and known as 'Pride of the West' muslin." Additional photocopied provenance comes from a 2011 Alexander Historical Auctions sale and reads, "In late 1926, early 1927, Orville Wright refurbished the Wright Flyer in preparation for loaning to the Science Museum in London, where it stayed until 1948. During this refurbishment, the airplane was recovered entirely with new Pride of the West muslin. Harvey D. Geyer was a close friend, associate and employee of the Wright Brothers from 1910 on, and upon the death of Orville Wright in 1948, was appointed as the technical advisor to the Wright Estate, so it seems obvious he could easily have obtained a sizable section of the original fabric. This relic was obtained by a prominent New York dealer of Western Americana from George H. Custer Family descendants in the Dayton area." Auction LOA from JSA.
