Elsewhere in this February auction, we offer a partial set of Morton's "Buster Brown Bread" pins - featuring photo images of Detroit Tigers who dominated the American League from 1907-09. Appearing contemporaneously with the "Buster Brown" issue were the pins here featured - under the banner of "Pennant Winner Bread," which was also sponsored by Morton's Bakery. And here offered is a complete set of "Pennant Winner Bread." Pins from either of these productions are intensely scarce, and capturing a mere sample from either is a major conquest, even for the accomplished hobbyist. From one of these issues to the other, the images fairly replicate, but there are a couple subtle differences in the featured subjects. Checklisted in several popular guide publications is the inclusion of Heinie Beckendorf (actually, in both pin issues), but we're highly doubtful that a Beckendorf pin exists. With that qualification, we're satisfied that the 15 different "Pennant Winner Bread" pins here outlined constitute a complete set. This production was performed by Whitehead & Hoag, and their identity appears printed on the perimeters, as well as on the paper inserts that remain in the reverses of all these. They are celluloids measuring 1-1/4" in diameter, and the beautiful artistry that embellishes the black-and-white photo portraits of these Tiger stars is appealing to the utmost...the victorious banner with the not-so-ferocious tiger emblazoned thereon.
From our inset photo of this set, we've attempted to conclusively identify each of the elements comprising the issue, and reviewing left-to-right, top-to-bottom, we detail: Donie Bush - NM/MT; Ty Cobb - very slightly imperfect in contour, NM; Hughie Jennings - minor discoloration in the white background, EX; Davy Jones - NM; Ed Willett (?) - very slightly subdued in the white background, NM; Jimmy Archer (?) - NM/MT; Ed Summers (?) - very minor wear on celluloid surface, NM; Sam Crawford - NM/MT; Matty McIntyre - NM; Wild Bill Donavan - very slightly imperfect contour, EX/MT; George Mullin - NM; Boss Schmidt - very light scratch on celluloid surface, NM; Claude Rossman (?) - NM/MT; George Moriarty (?) - NM; and Germany Schaefer - NM/MT. In its overall condition this is an utterly magnificent set - especially in consideration of its artistry...a triumph in aesthetics. Looming most large, however, is the profound scarcity of Morton's "Pennant Winner Bread."
