The camera's lens may be zeroed in on Wagner's rugged facial features, yet equally interesting is the view of his hands on the bat—a la Charles Conlon's iconic batting-grip close-up. Here, it's George Grantham Bain's news service that captured the Flying Dutchman in his 1910 home threads at Forbes Field. Based on the large 8" x 10" dimensions (unusual for Bain), it appears that the photo was produced at a later date. Culver Pictures overstampings adorn the reverse, along with a numerical code "39580" in Bain's familiar style. Handwritten editorial notations in an unidentified hand read, "Hans Wagner / the greatest shortstop ever / Pittsburgh Pirates." VG/EX condition with peripheral newsroom wear.
