A scarce artifact of the short-lived Federal League, the offered certificate acknowledged ownership of five shares of common stock (valued at $10.00 per share). The ornately embossed, 8-1/4" x 11-1/2" document retains EX/MT display quality with three vertical compacting folds. Even the popularity of baseball could not keep the fledgling Federal League alive for more than a few seasons. Organized in March, 1913, the League was disbanded by the end of 1915. Lawsuits, large financial losses and the inclusion of only a few star players wooed from the Major Leagues hampered efforts by Federal League owners to mount a real challenge for the hearts of fans.
