Thorne Studios admirably served as the official Yankee photographer from the late 1920s to early 1940s. As advanced collectors well know, Thorne photos are scarce, sought-after and prestigious due to the high quality and composition of their posed action portraits—with crisp, clean, sleek close-ups that avoid the clutter of stadium backdrops and uneven lighting.
This desirable Thorne example hails from spring training in St. Petersburg and features terrific image focus right down to the sparse grass blades sprouting up out of the infield dirt. The strong compositional balance suggests a quite skilled photographer behind the camera. "Thorne Photo - Official Photographer" is stamped on the reverse. Condition of the 8" x 10" photo is Near Mint. Encapsulated as Type I by PSA/DNA.
