Before we get to Lou, let's talk about Herb—Herb Hunter, that is. A middling major leaguer from 1916 to 1921, Hunter went on to great heights as the spirited organizer of all-star player trips to Japan. SABR researcher Bill Nowlin has described Hunter as "a baseball tour impresario of sorts...eventually becoming known as Baseball’s Ambassador to the Orient and leading numerous tours to the Land of the Rising Sun." In 1931, Hunter spearheaded the journey that included Lou Gehrig, Lefty Grove, Lefty O’Doul, Rabbit Maranville, Mickey Cochrane, Frankie Frisch and Al Simmons, to name but a few. They traveled aboard the Tatsuta Maru—site of both a famous group shot (linked here) and this winning photo of Gehrig decked out in a tux. Amazingly, the 8" x 10" portrait is signed by none other than Hunter to Lou himself! Dated 7/20/32, the black-fountain-pen inscription reads, "'Sitting on top,' Lou--and may you always be! / Herb Hunter." EX condition with spectacular clarity and contrast, and with the image area above Gehrig's shoulders being slightly darker, apparently from the original negative. Encapsulated as Type I by PSA/DNA. Auction LOA from JSA.
