Surprising it is that Cracker Jack, that wonderful gooey confection and the bane of theater carpets, never had a large presence in the distribution of baseball player images. There were the card issues of 1914 and '15, of course...and then a few dabblings in the recent era. But what could have been more compatible to Cracker Jack than baseball-oriented inserts of some sort? The opportunity was seized in 1933 when a series of 25 different player pins became available, singly, in boxes of Cracker Jack. And here available is one such complete set. Nowhere on these pins is the sponsor, Cracker Jack, announced. Instead, pioneers in our collecting industry affirmed that, from personal experience, the promotion actually took place. As such, the pins comprising this issue are documented as 1933 Cracker Jack PR4. These pins are 13/16" in diameter and their player images are rather primitive line drawings (though with an acceptable degree of accuracy). The overall condition of this set is about EX - which is admirable, in light that the images were lithographed. All 25 of these pins retain their original contour, and the stars detail: Cuyler - EX; Dean - NM; Frisch - EX; Gehrig - EX/MT; Gomez - VG/EX; Goslin - EX/MT; Grove - EX/MT; Hartnett - EX; Travis Jackson - EX; Lazzeri - VG/EX; Lyons - EX/MT; Maranville - EX; Ruffing - VG; Simmons - VG; Terry - NM/MT; Vance - EX/MT; and Paul Waner - EX.
