Four years before debuting Captain America, Joe Simon created this pen-and-ink illustration of 1937 Syracuse Chiefs battery duo (and roommates) Lloyd "Whitey" Moore and Dee Moore. The theme of the central portraits is that Whitey just "came within one strike of a no hit game" and Dee had once "pitched no-hit game...for Macon against Columbus when he was a pitcher." The surrounding caricatures provide humorous insight on Whitey's career to date. The 12-1/2" x 26" piece (framed to slightly larger dimensions) is apparent EX/MT to NM and features Simon's familiar dark signature in the lower-right corner. As an interesting side note, Whitey Moore's 1940 Cincinnati Reds World Series ring sold in our February auction for nearly $17,000.
