This is an exceptionally large collection of vintage original photographs from up to 75 years ago that all feature lovable Chicago Cubs players of the distant past. All of the photos in this lot were originally acquired from the 1996 sale of photos from the archives of The Sporting News. TSN was long known as "The Bible of Baseball" and for its attention to detail. Thus, the magazine had a nearly bottomless assortment of images that famously included players of very short tenures. If you ever needed a photo of a player who only played in one game or a handful of games in their career, The Sporting News archives would have been the place to find it. Featured here are an impressively varied assortment of Cubs past, the majority from team photographers, a good quantity of news service photos and a handful that may have come from studio photographers (at least one George Burke Studio photo of Harry Chiti 1952). All also feature a hologram sticker from the original 1996 sale. While not heavy in stars (these Cubs teams had few, though there is a Jimmy Foxx wire photo from 1942, Gabby Hartnett, Billy Herman, Dizzy Dean with the Tulas Oilers after demotion), the collection includes a huge chunk of that era's rosters with good detail of a variety of uniform styles and some good action shots. Many names you'll know like Paul Derringer, Lou Novikoff, Randy Jackson, Charlie Grimm, Phil Cavaretta, Tony Cuccinello, Hank Sauer, and Mickey Owen among the wire photos, Walker Cooper, Phil Wrigley, Sauer, Roy Smalley, Dee Fondy, Novikoff, Eddie Miksis, Bill Nicholson, and Monte Irvin among the team's photos. Of that latter group, a large majority are 8" x 10". The sizes of the wire photos vary widely, of course, but average about 7" x 9". Condition overall is excellent.
