Through much of the second half of the last century, the Hawthorn-Mellody Co. prospered in Chicago. It was a dairy that provided milk, cheese and ice cream. In 1952, the company embarked on a promotional campaign by providing young patrons the opportunity to attain a series of collector pins that featured stars rostered with the Chicago White Sox. There were ten different players showcased in the production, and the only method of acquiring them was as mail-in premiums...they weren't dispensed with any product. The complete unit of ten different was available by the redemption of three product coupons and twenty cents. 1952 Hawthorn-Mellody pins are not, by any means, plentiful in our industry, but due to their method of original distribution, they're generally found as complete sets - such as the one here offered. These are 1-3/8" in diameter, and their brown-and-white sepia player images are conveyed as lithos - as opposed to more durable celluloids - and the scarcity of these pins is much more intense in quality condition. We're particularly impressed with this unit as it details: Ray Coleman - EX/MT; Sam Dente - NM; Joe Dobson - NM/MT; Nellie Fox - EX; Sherm Lollar - EX; Billy Pierce - EX/MT; Eddie Robinson - EX/MT; Hector Rodriguez - NM; Eddie Stewart - NM; and Al Zarilla - NM. This particular set is further enhanced in that there are included a couple auxiliary niceties - An advertising fold-out (8-1/2" x 5-1/2") that's printed on both sides; and a "Club of Champs" membership pin which is attached to its issued validation paper. The advertiser is VG/EX, and the membership pin is NM.
