Manufactured by Herff Jones, this 10K-gold, size 13 ring features a CZ stone and attractive designs. It rates Near Mint and is engraved inside the band, "1983 / IMS CORP."
A 1996 LOA from Indiana resident Daniel Pease reads, in part, "I purchased the ring in the summer of 1994 from The Indianapolis Downtown Antique Mall, located at 1044 Virginia Avenue, in Indianapolis, Indiana. I purchased it from Sandy Dew, a friend of mine that worked at the mall at that time. The owner of the ring had consigned it at the mall and had told Mrs. Dew that he was going to scrap it out if it did not sell. When I purchased the ring it was missing the stone on top; I sent it to the manufacturer Herff Jones and had them put a new stone (CZ) in the ring. In the spring of 1996 I sent the winner of the '500' race of 1983, Tom Sneva, a photo of the ring to obtain any information from him. He could not remember anything about the ring but suggested I contact his team owner, Dan Cotter. I sent a letter and photos to Mr. Cotter and he called me and enlightened me as to the ring's history. Mr. Cotter told me that Herff Jones had made these rings for his pit crew and this was one of those rings. It was given to the team's 'fueler,' Tim Kelly. He was not sure of Tim Kelly's whereabout or why he parted with the ring. I made many efforts to find Tim Kelly, but I never was successful."
Also included is a page titled "Phone Conversation with Dan Cotter 11-13-96," which reads, "Dan Cotter called me Wednesday 11-13-96 in response to above letter he told me that Kelly was Tim Kelly or nicknamed 'Crazy' Tim. He was a fueler on the team from 1983-1984. Mr. Cotter said it was their first year at the speedway and that they were on a limited budget. Mr. Cotter said each team member had a similar ring, about twelve in all. Mr. Cotter said he guessed Tim Kelly sold, hocked, or gave the ring away. The last he knew about Kelly was that he was working for Pagan Racing and living in Tucson, Arizona."
