According to a news clipping on the reverse, "E.F. Spurney, second baseman, is the most scientific player in the aggregation. He leads the batting list, is a very brilliant fielder, and a clever base runner. He knows the game thoroughly, and never gets rattled. He is undoubtedly the 'star' player of the nine, and will give the eastern college ball players a few points on how to play second base. He is 5 feet 8-1/2 inches in height, and weighs 173 pounds. He played a short time last year with the Pittsburg league team, and made a very creditable record." There are also handwritten notations indicating that this 4-1/8" x 6-3/8" cabinet was a family heirloom: "Cousin Ed. Spurney / Cleveland Ohio / Ann Arbor School / Graduated at Law." Near Mint image (with negligible peripheral wear) on EX gilt-edged mount (with chipping in corner areas).
