In the tumultuous adoration of Connie Mack's first dynasty, fans in Philadelphia readily recognized the stars who rostered the champion Athletics. No need then to provide identity captions on glorious souvenirs such as this celluloid pin - one that pictures 22 members of what we believe to be the 1911 squad. These Athletics were on the fast track to win another World Crown, and tribute was demonstrated in this souvenir. With its primitive attaching pin device, this piece measures 2-1/4" in diameter. And though we note that it bears some very minor surface wear and very minor foxing at the perimeter, it remains in strong EX condition.
For the 1912 season, the Athletics abandoned their familiar "pillbox" style caps (which they had adopted only as recently as 1909); as such, we may readily isolate the vintage of this antique to that brief era. These players (per their familiarity to their adoring throngs) are photo-portrait reported on this piece, but without the benefit of captions. We immediately identify Hall of Famers Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Home Run Baker, Eddie Collins and, of course, Connie Mack. But we've researched this pin a little further, and we're satisfied that at least Ira Thomas, Jack Barry, Bris Lord, Rube Oldring, Cy Morgan, Jack Lapp, Harry Davis, Paddy Livingston, and Topsy Hartsel appear here as well. This is a fabulous relic to the glory of that dynasty, and it's in outstanding condition.
