An amazing artifact from the early days of football. A huge hard ( really hard), rubber guard designed to protect the nose while playing football. The device, patented in 1891, fit over the nose and had a built in bite plate for the player to hold it in place with his teeth. There are nose breathing holes and a series of holes through the mouth plate for breathing as well. The bizarre shape resembles a flying bat, giving it its "batwing " appellation. Manufactured by Victor Sporting Goods, this rare survivor is one of the finest known. Overall Excellent to Mint condition with original head strap. (Which is rarely seen still intact on these relics!)
