A shared passion for the pursuit of bread-end labels unites the worlds of sports and non-sports collecting. This specialized area appeals most to those who love an impossible challenge, as labels from any series are seldom found in nice shape—if they can be found at all. As a function of the small pieces' fragile construction, the items were typically damaged when they were used to seal the bread loaves that they promoted, and purchasers' attempts at neat removal were often thwarted by the labels' stubborn contact glue. Here offered is a truly impressive store window sign that was designed to announce a series of Movie and Athletic Stars labels, which appeared on loaves of Junge's Bread in 1951. The 14" x 22" poster is comprised of red-and-black printing on heavy white cardboard, with an adhered uncut sheet of 16 different, actual bread-end labels from the coveted Bread for Energy series occupying a central position. (Stars featured on this panel's individual label depictions, placed in a 4-by-4 arrangement, include: Johnny Lujack, Bing Crosby, Tim Holt, Buddy Young, Robert Mitchum, Kid Gavilan, Edgar Bergen (with Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd), John Wayne, Rod Cameron, Leo Gorcey, Joe Fulks, Bob Hope, Gene Stanlee, Rex Allen, William Bendix, and Rocky Marciano.) Overall quality of appearance is about EX, with creases (primarily at the top left, partially repaired) and routine peripheral faults. The label sheet concedes a crease in the Young design, and surface paper loss at the bottom edge of the Stanlee. This is an especially scarce and desirable advertising piece—with sixteen never-used specimens of an extremely difficult production still neatly attached!
