When afforded common courtesy, most celebrities – including baseball Hall of Famers – reciprocate in the same spirit. Such is demonstrated in this trio of signings – all penned by diamond heroes of a bygone era. Detailed, these include: 1) Jocko Conlan – ALS penned to an admirer who evidently sent him a couple photos for signing. Jocko, then retired and living in Scottsdale, writes, “Dear Friend Mike, Where did you get that 8 x 10 batting picture of me. I’d like to get two, and I’ll pay you pal. Best wishes Jocko Conlan.” The medium is a simple 9” x 6” sheet with a stick-on personalized label. The text and the signature are thoroughly “9-10.” 2) Sam Crawford – ALS dated in 1949 from his retirement in Pearblossom, Calif., Sam writes, “Dear Mr. Vlach – Thank you for your letter. Am always glad to send autographs and hope that mine may add something to your collection. The ball pen was not so good at the top [evidently referring to the autographed medium], so had to use fountain pen at bottom. Hope you are coming along O.K. With all good wishes, Sincerely Samuel E. Crawford. ‘Wahoo Sam’.” The text is a bit faulty (“8-9”), but the signature and epithet are “9-10.” Included with this letter is its corresponding mailing envelope which is in reduced condition, but it bears Crawford’s signature again (as simply “Sam Crawford” – “9-10”) in the form of a return address. 3) Waite Hoyt – as an abbreviated notation, Hoyt evidently responds to an admirer’s inquiry about his greatest thrill on the diamond. On a sheet from his personalized notepad, Waite recalls, “Most exciting…1st World Series…1921…Yanks 3 Giants 0…Pitchers Hoyt [and] Nehf. This is a felt tip writing, and it’s “9-10.” There’s more to this declaration than meets the eye. The ’21 Series was a best-of-nine affair. Hoyt and Art Nehf faced each other in Games 2, 5, and the concluding Game 8. Both pitched complete games in all three contests, but it was Game 2 that Hoyt cites in this message…he fired a two-hit shutout against the McGraws that day, but lost the final game of the Series.
