Graded 50 VG/EX 4 by SGC. This great rarity, featuring an updated team-name caption that only accompanied the American Tobacco Company's Polar Bear brand, is viewed as a collecting milestone just beneath the level of the T206 set's famous "Big Three" in significance. And, because of the brand's form and packaging, cards with Polar Bear backs are especially difficult to find in presentable condition. (Polar Bear was sold as "scrap" tobacco, meaning that its cards were placed into direct contact with raw tobacco rather than being tucked next to cigarettes in a protective pack.) Here is an item that carries a far more generous measure of freshness and eye appeal than is customarily found. This example has escaped its exposure to loose tobacco with almost none of the usually seen specks on its surface. Its nicely proportioned borders surround a strong image, and the card's corners exhibit natural rounding consistent with handling, but not abuse. A small wrinkle can be seen on the back, in the border surrounding the bottom-left corner. The acquisition of a "Demmitt, St. Louis American" card has always been considered a major accomplishment in our hobby, and the offered card's presentation quality is quite satisfying. Very Good to Excellent condition.
