With its original newspaper clipping affixed to the reverse, we have no doubt that this orchestrated posing of Ted Williams was copyrighted by the Associated Press. It’s a wire photo that was published in early 1959 when Ted inked another (his 19th, in fact) deal with the Red Sox. It had to do with money – Ted’s compensation for the upcoming 1959 season – and it depicts him with a beaming smile, an unfamiliar Ted Williams countenance. Bartering for the Red Sox is the venerated Bucky Harris, the newly appointed GM for Boston. Cropped a bit on the right edge, the photograph measures about 8-1/2” x 8”, but it is otherwise faultless. Among card collectors, this is an exceptionally popular image…it was reproduced as card #68 in Fleer’s 80-card expose of Ted Williams in 1959 – and that issue, card #68, is particularly elusive.
