Federal League collectors will take special interest in this 5" x 7" full-length portrait from the tail end of Mathewson's pitching years. The image most likely comes from 1913, yet the first record of publication noted on the reverse, "MAR 1914," coincides with rumors that Matty might jump to the brand-new upstart Federal League. A partial paper caption reads, "Christy Mathewson, the famous pitcher of the New York Giants who has been asked to manage the Brooklyn Federal League team. The pitcher says he would like to become a manager, but will reserve a decision ..." There is a source stamping for the Chicago Tribune, along with two additional date-stampings for a far later usage in 1987. Normal newsroom condition includes editorial highlights outlining Mathewson's body, a handful of minuscule pinholes, slight image tanning in a few areas, light "show-through" impressions from reverse-side writing, and minor evidence of peripheral handling. Mathewson stayed with the Giants in 1914—posting the last great win-loss record of his career, 24-13—and later made his managerial debut in 1916 with the Cincinnati Reds. LOA from PSA DNA.
