Graded VG 3 by PSA, one of just five copies validated by that company. Hall of Famer. This test-issue superstar item demonstrated the potential appeal of Coca-Cola's subsequent 1952 release of ten "Playing Tips" carton inserts in the New York area. The incredibly rare piece preceded its sought-after successors—probably on just a very few stores' shelves. The card—which measures about 7-1/4" in overall length—pictures the young and smiling New York Giants outfielder holding a bottle of the endorsed beverage on the obverse and carries his bio on the back. Until several years ago, this was a virtually non-existent piece. Only a small handful were known before 1997, when a small "find" of about a dozen Mays cards was discovered. Virtually all of those collectibles had suffered varying degrees of water damage, but the Willie Mays card here presented is completely free of unsightly faults. A horizontal crease—largely camouflaged by the piece's colors—affects the base-tab of the item, and a few smaller ones can be discerned in its upper body, but general presentation quality nevertheless approaches Excellent. A truly marvelous and elite 1950s advertising relic!
