On the many merits of his fine gridiron performances at the University of Michigan, Anthony Carter was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001. It was a fairly large class that was so honored that year, and aside from wide receiver Anthony Carter, such luminaries as Barry Switzer, D. D. Lewis, Doug Williams and Steve Young were likewise enshrined. Michigan's success in the early 1980s was much carried on Carter's shoulders as he earned All-America honors in three of those seasons and established a school record for scored points.
As an enduring keepsake from his 2001 induction, Anthony Carter was awarded this now offered ring - this one is the real deal. And the treasured ring is accompanied by its original designer display box.
The Ring: Centrally, the crown of this ring is a blue translucent stone. The stone is precisely cut and it remains utterly pristine with nary a chip or scratch. On two beveled surfaces about the perimeter of the crown are "National Football Foundation," and "Hall of Fame." The right shank bears an image of the College Football Hall of Fame logo which is flanked (top and bottom) by "Michigan" and "WR." On the left shank, we note the image of a footballer embellished by regal wreathing, with "Carter" above, and "2001" below. Inside the band there appear "HJ...10K" and an engraved "A C." All of this, of course, is self-explanatory except that "HJ" identifies the ring's maker, Herff-Jones. All of the characters of this ring remain in their original crisp relief. The indication of wear is evident only in the engraved initials in the band - the piece is size 10-1/2 and categorically NM/MT.
The Box: Serving as a vessel for the ring's safe-keeping, this box is also ideal for the permanent display for the gem. Measuring 7-1/2" x 5-7/8" x 2-1/2" deep, this is a very substantial piece in itself. Handsomely machined in what appears to be mahogany, it is engineered with a quality hinge that opens to a rich velvet-lined sanctum, and as is apparent in our photo, the lid features a glass window. On the top of the lid there remains the original brass identification plate proclaiming "Anthony Carter...University of Michigan." There are no meaningful material compromises with this exclusive box. We note only a very few incidental surface blemishes and a lightly imperfect caption plate; it would be welcomed at EX-EX/MT.
