Encapsulated and assessed “Authentic” by PSA. Avenging their previous season's humbling loss to the White Sox (a.k.a. Hitless Wonders), the Cubs steamrolled over Ty Cobb's Tigers in the 1907 World Series. Only Game 1—a 12-inning, 3-3 tie called due to darkness—was a nailbiter. In the remaining 4-game sweep, no Chicago pitcher (not Jack Pfiester, Ed Reulbach, Orval Overall or Mordecai Brown) gave up more than a single run to Detroit, resulting in an infinitesimal .75 ERA overall. The Cubs' mighty offensive production was spearheaded by Harry Steinfeldt (who batted .471 with 8 hits) and Johnny Evers (.350 with 7 hits). Additionally, the South Siders kept their opponents guessing with 15 stolen bases, including 5 by Jimmy Slagle alone. Meanwhile, a young Georgia Peach (the A.L.'s newly crowned batting champion) mustered a meager 4 safeties in 20 at-bats for a paltry .200 average, and Wahoo Sam Crawford did little better at .238. Incredible but true, the Tigers were held scoreless in 44 of the 48 total innings. Much the same fate greeted Cobb and company in '08 as the Cubbies claimed a repeat title and established themselves as the first championship dynasty in modern baseball history.
Of the scant few 1907 Fall Classic tickets that have ever surfaced at auction (we are only aware of 4 instances in the past two decades), this offered ticket stub is the sole known example originating from Game 3. The lively contest at Chicago's West Side Grounds saw the Cubs collect 10 hits by 7 different players—a full half of those hits being doubles (Jimmy Sheckard, Frank Chance, Steinfeldt and Evers ). On the mound, Big Ed Reulbach allowed just 6 hits, 3 walks and 1 run in a solid complete-game performance. The unique surviving stub measures 2-1/4" x 1-3/8", retains bright color and bold printing throughout, and bears some multiple creasing. Strictly graded at GD to VG, appears nicer.
