Pep Comics #1 (1/40) - CGC grade FN- 5.5, Unrestored, with off-white pages. First appearance of the Shield and the Comet. Irv Novick and Jack Cole art. Claiming the title as the first patriotic superhero of the comic books, Joe Higgins (alias the Shield) experienced a nine year run that started in 1940. While most comic book superheroes had disappeared by 1946, the Shield still held on for another two years, surviving only as a backup feature in books he used to lead. But for a couple of years the Shield was the company's biggest star. The inaugural appearance of the first of the patriotic superheroes is a comic book milestone, and very desirable, particularly since it also contains the first appearance of Jack Cole's Comet, the most murderous superhero in the comics.
