Gary Alan Ruse's novel, Morlac, Quest of the Green Magician, was part of Signet's line, in 1986. The fantasy tale was complemented by an intriguing Ken Kelly cover treatment that pictures the novel's three main protagonists as they are surrounded by a host of heavily armored centaurs (Kelly has depicted no less than six, in various degrees of completeness). The multi-armed giant provides a strong compositional element for the work's center, as all action swirls about him. (His similarity to Tars Tarkus of the Burroughs' John Carter novels provides the painting with an even more "other-worldly" flavor.) Of course, what would a good fantasy novel be without the usual prone (and beautiful) female in the foreground? (Women in fantasy paintings seem to fall down a lot.) The painting remains in Excellent condition, despite a 3" horizontal band of water staining along the bottom edge of the reverse, and a slight separation of the board's layers at that level—none of which affects the painting's front. (26-3/4" x 39" oil on board cover painting by Ken Kelly; signed and dated in lower left corner.)
