Roger Maris signed items have always maintained a lofty status among collectors, with his signature being one of the most desirable of all non Hall of Fame players. As coveted as his signature has been, however, even the most ardent of autograph seekers most likely has never laid eyes on an original early style "Maras" signature, an example of which is featured on this rare ball. Roger Maris was born Roger Eugene Maras, and it remained his name until the family legally changed it to "Maris" in the spring of 1955. This particular ball was signed by Maris during his second year of professional baseball in 1954, as a member of Keokuk in the 3-I League (class B). The medium toned Official "Three I League" ball has been signed in blue ink by 20 members of the club including manager Jo Jo White on the sweet spot. The only signature of real significance on the ball, however, is that of Maris, who has penned his name, "Roger Maras," ("9") on a side panel. This is only the second ball we have ever seen featuring this early signature of Maris, with the other (a 1953 Fargo-Moorhead team ball) having appeared in our November 2001 sale. The ball is accompanied by a copy of the official North Dakota District Court order (dated April 19, 1955) legally granting the family's name change. This is a an exceptional and extremely rare signed item dating to Maris' second season in professional baseball. LOA from James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA.
