In our last auction we had a large lot of autographed photos and letters that were sent to a little boy who was very ill for a period of several years. These items were sent to him as responses to his mother's many requests. In retrospect, no solicitation matched the volume of response that the mother and son received from the cast members of the popular Jello radio program. Jack Benny and his cast were extremely generous with their outpouring of no less than nine photos and letters, including a surprise follow-up Western Union telegram for that Christmas. In recognition of the special nature of this collection, we have chosen to keep it intact and unbroken. All nine pieces are included here, each with evidence of a former album mounting (spots of excess paper at all four corners, with the exception of the photos of Wilson and Harris). Four of the signed photos, as noted, feature secretarial or facsimile signatures. Each has at least some light wear or light creasing at the corners (that will mostly disappear with framing, unless otherwise stated, but all are quite appealing in their level of presentation. LOA from James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA.
8" x 10" black and white photos: Jack Benny - light creases above the image and signature; VG with a personalized black ink signature that reads, "To Jimmy - with all good wishes of - Jack Benny" (Secretarial), and Mary Livingstone (in real life, she was Mrs. Jack Benny) - VG/EX; personalized black ink signature that reads, "To Jimmy - Kindest Regards - Mary Livingstone"—signature grading "8".
5" x 7" black and white photos: "Rochester" - EX (Facsimile); Dennis Day - VG/EX; green ink signature and salutation that reads, "Best Wishes - Dennis Day" (Secretarial); Don Wilson - announcer and cast member; VG, due to large corner crease at bottom right hand corner; black ink signature and salutation that reads, "Sincerely - Don Wilson"—signature grading "8"; Phil Harris - VG/EX; black ink signature and salutation that reads, "Sincerely - Phil Harris" (Facsimile).
Other items: a truly rare item—a 7-1/4" x 7" piece of stationery with Jack Benny letterhead, signed by all six cast members (Harris, "Rochester," and Day have signed in pencil—the others in black ink, all minimally grading "9"; the usual mailing folds, intersecting with, but not affecting, the signatures of Wilson and Harris; actor Eddie Anderson chose to sign his character's name of Rochester, not his own), 7-1/4" x 10-3/8" typed letter on stationery with Jack Benny letterhead, dated 10/11/40 and signed by Benny (VG/EX; one of the mailing folds intersects with, but does not affect, the "8/9" signature), and a Western Union Christmas telegram with a printed color illustration (obviously unsigned; approaches VG).
