This advertising piece was done as a Western ammunition ad from the late war years, probably 1943 to 1945. It was captioned, "It takes a heap of shooting to make an ace," and it pictures and elderly quail hunter behind an image of a young fighter pilot. The ad copy stresses how a background of hunting has aided our young men's targetry skills during the conflict. The faces of both men are splendid, as are the repetitive images of Western's shotgun shells. Item: Original oil on stretched canvas by Walter Otto, circa 1943. It measures 23" x 30" in size. There is some paint flaking in the background white around the figures, but the images are untouched. The painting presents beautifully as is but will benefit from cleaning. Unsigned. Included with this piece is a an original tear sheet of the published advertisement, for which the work was commissioned.
