You've seen these large antique coffee mills in antique stores either intact or made into something that the manufacturer never intended, like a lamp or coffee table. They are, in fact becoming rare and are very collectable. This is an original Woodruff & Edwards Co. cast-iron, two-wheel coffee mill, a #7 size with 17" wheels. The outside of the cast-iron wheels are cast with words "Elgin National Coffee Mill." The heavy base retains 90% of its original dark red paint. The top hopper appears to be a replacement for the original brass hopper and has been painted a lighter shade of red. The mill was obtained at a sale of artifacts from the Ringling Brothers Circus. It is accompanied by a letter on circus letterhead, dated Dec. 2, 1900, signed by Al Ringling to Woodruff and Edwards Co. enclosing a check for a 17" Double Wheel Coffee Mill—this is that mill. The tag from the sale indicates that the mill was used for the circus from 1901 to 1921. The signature of Al Ringling grades "8". LOAs from James Spence & Steve Grad and John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Please note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, the cost of shipping may be substantial.
