Graded Mint 9 by Global Authentication. No "sophomore jinx" for the "Splendid Splinter"! In 1940, the young Ted Williams enjoyed a solid campaign. He led the League in runs scored and on-base percentage while batting a whopping .344—which is, coincidentally, his lifetime batting average, as well. The black-and-white, photographic design of Williams' second-year card afforded collectors this appealing depiction of the future American icon. His ballpark accomplishments were already inspiring awe during the time this beautiful item was released, and the slugger, as a military aviator, would soon conquer new battlefields in the skies. Glorious tribute is paid to the heroic Hall of Famer by this splendid collectible. Its cardfront image reveals deep, rich detail surrounded by bright, completely untoned white borders. The card's centering displays extraordinarily fine balance for the issue, and its reverse is uncommonly fresh and clear. This superb Williams piece, from a sensitive and often preservation-impaired series, pays marvelous visual homage to its subject. Remarkably eye-catching Mint condition.
