The New York Giants, along with all other major league teams of 1946, welcomed back many players who had returned to baseball after the end of World War II. Because of this sudden influx, teams such as the Giants had many more players than roster spots. As a result, there was a revolving door throughout the season as players were traded, released or sent back to the minors. New York, managed by Hall of Famer Mel Ott, was no exception, with 57 different players appearing at some point during the year. This ONL (Frick) baseball has the signatures of 24 players from that 1946 season, including Mel Ott. Gene “Junior” Thompson and Willard Marshall share the sweet spot, while Johnny Mize, Bill Rigney (rookie), Ernie Lombardi, Buddy Blattner, Marv Grissom (rookie), Dave Koslo, Buddy Kerr, Mickey Grasso (only year with Giants), Johnny Gee (at 6’ 9”, the tallest player in baseball at the time) and Sid Gordon are among the more notable players. Jim Gladd (only year in majors), Dick Bartell, (last year in majors), Jack Kraus (only year with Giants) and Red Kress (coach, pitched one game) are additional keys which definitively date this ball to 1946. The toned ball has been lightly coated, with the signatures very clear, grading 7/8. Hall of Famers Ott, Lombardi and Mize, along with some obscure and scarce signatures make this a significant and very interesting New York Giant’s souvenir. LOA.
