Each card has been graded by PSA. To illustrate the stark scarcity of cards from the issue known as R328, we consulted comparative figures in PSA's registry. There, we discovered that, to the date of this writing, 780 U. S. Caramel cards (those troublesome R328's) have been submitted to that grading agency. Then turning our attention, we index to 1933 Goudey's venerated issue, R319, to discover that over 27,000 cards from that production have thus far been evaluated by PSA. (Hmmm...) In the real world, the 29 different in this offered collection of U.S. Caramels constitute the complete set—less numbers 21 and 22 (Jack Dempsey and Chuck Klein, respectively). All of them have been graded by PSA, and nearly all have merited very acceptable marks. None of the cards were redeemed (for the valuable $1.00 ball or the $3.00 glove—but then, we shouldn't be surprised, as the carefully orchestrated release of #16 Lindstrom was jealously withheld from public circulation.) With the utmost respect for PSA's analytical determinations for high-quality cards, we often dispute their assessments in moderately preserved cards. Presuming forgiveness for our impudence, we view several cards in this U.S. Caramel constituency to be better than their indicated grades. And so, for the readership considering a great plunge into the more exclusive reaches of Depression Era cards, do consider: Graded PSA NM 7: 2 cards w/#'s 9 Gene Sarazen and 25 Jack Sharkey; PSA EX-MT 6: 5 cards w/#'s 3 Bobby Jones, 11 Rogers Hornsby, 15 Gene Tunney, 18 Tony Lazzeri and 20 Red Ruffing; PSA EX 5: 10 cards w/#'s 2 Paul Waner, 8 Chick Hafey, 10 Rabbit Maranville, 12 Mickey Cochrane, 14 Ty Cobb, 17 Al Simmons, 19 Wally Berger, 23 Jimmie Foxx, 29 George Earnshaw and 30 Frankie Frisch; PSA VG-EX 4: 5 cards w/#'s 7 Joe Cronin, 26 Lou Gehrig, 28 Eddie Brandt, 31 Lefty Gomez and 32 Babe Ruth; PSA VG 3: 5 cards w/#'s 1 Eddie Collins, 4 Bill Terry, 5 Earle Combs, 6 Bill Dickey and 24 Lefty O"Doul; PSA GD 2: 1 card, #13 Lloyd Waner; and PSA PR-FR 1: 1 card, #27 Lefty Grove.
