Classic June 2005

By the fourth season following its inception, the Mid-Summer Classic had certainly become an institution on baseball's landscape. Specifically, the All-Star Game of 1937 was hosted by Washington's Griffith Stadium, and the best of each League faced off for the annual tilt. Not fewer than 10 eventual Hall of Famers studded the American League roster, so it's little wonder that the Junior Circuit's squad claimed an 8-3 victory. In celebration (or perhaps in anticipation), 24 of those selected to represent the American League signed this offered OAL (Harridge) ball. The strength of these signatures ranges from "1" to "7", averaging about "5". Fortunately, all the major stars are legible (except that we can't identify Joe Cronin). That qualified, Lefty Grove ("6") appears on the sweet spot, and we then witness Lou Gehrig ("2"), Earl Averill, Wally Moses, Rick Ferrell, Lefty Gomez, Red Rolfe, Bill Dickey, Harlond Clift, Wes Ferrell, Joe McCarthy, Monty Stratton, Luke Sewell, Hank Greenberg ("4"), Jimmie Foxx ("7"), Roger Cramer, Buddy Myer, Charlie Gehringer, Tom Bridges, Sam West, Beau Bell, Mel Harder, Joe DiMaggio ("6") and one other. LOA from Steve Grad/PSA DNA and LOA from James Spence Authentication.
