This oversized, 11" x 14-1/8" color photo captures the solemnity of Pope John Paul II's 2004 pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, to the site where Roman Catholics believe the Virgin Mary appeared in 1858 to a 14-year-old peasant girl. Since then, Lourdes has become a place of worship—especially for the devoted seeking cures for diseases and other ailments. John Paul's journey was especially poignant, for in 2004, the Pontiff was in failing health. Given his lifelong devotion to the Virgin Mary, this visit was undoubtedly meaningful on a personal level. The photo offered here—taken during his celebration of Mass— features the Pope’s large, black-ink signature, "Joannes Paulus II" ("10"), which has been penned in Latin along the white bottom border of the NM image. The portrait also features the raised Vatican seal of the "Secreteria Particolare di Sua Santita." Such a seal only graces photographs featuring an authentic signature of the Holy Father. Oversized images of the Pontiff are extremely sought after items, with this example—and its subject matter—among the most desirable we have seen! LOAs from Steve Grad and John Reznikoff/PSA DNA.
