Artist: A.C.F.
Medium: Oil on canvas.
Size: 36 in. x 29 in.
Signed: "A. C. F. 1879" at lower left.
Description: This is a strong rendering of a Spanish fighting bull with silver embellishments on its horns and a ring through its nose. In all probability, this fine painting was commissioned by the owner of this particular prized bull. Invariably, good Spanish fighting bulls that fought valiantly and survived the ring were kept as "breeders." The fact that the artist has painted this animal with a ring through its nose is a strong indication that it was in fact kept for stud purposes and shows. The unidentified artist was obviously extremely talented and has portrayed this courageous animal with the kind of strength and ferociousness that most of them possess. This painting has been the subject of some restoration including relining. There appears to be a small repaired tear below the bull's jaw, as well as a few other areas of inpainting. Ornate 19th Century French gilt wood frame.
Estimated Value: $2,000-$3,000.
