Among the tobacco era's exclusive and most finely crafted treasures was the 25-subject production that we categorize "L1." The media for this issue were uniformly cut leather pieces, approximately 9-3/4" x 11-1/2", upon which were imposed detailed imagery of individual ballplayers. The scarcity of L1's is logically explained in that earning one of them necessitated the redemption of 50 "gift slips," which were dispensed in Helmar's "Turkish Trophies" cigarettes. There was nothing passive in attaining one of these. Instead, the enthusiast of that age had to accumulate the coupons with concerted resolve. Today, pursuing L1's is a labor (or frustration) of love as our hobby has inherited that initial challenge—now intensified by the cruel attrition of time. This one is #120, Frank "Home Run" Baker from that production. While most L1 leathers boast identical images as their T3 Turkey Red counterparts, this is not so with Baker. The T3 of Baker actually depicts his teammate Jack Barry. They corrected this error in the L1 issue as the image actually portrays Frank "Home Run" Baker in an extremely attractive batting pose. We report that it has a small pin hole located at the top center (about a half inch from the edge) and, if we must be critical, a small area of minor abrasion appears in the extreme upper left. Thereafter, this is an exemplary piece. To declare a technical grade is to serve it an injustice; we prefer to advance this leather on the merits of the presence it projects—apparent EX/MT, and surely one of the finest examples extant. Neatly framed to 14" x 16" dimensions.
