Presented is a scarce Souvenir Program (with a full proof ticket) from the unforgettable September 22, 1927 Heavyweight Championship bout between pugilistic legends Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey. Includes:
1) 9/22/1927 Tunney vs. Dempsey Official Program - How remarkable it is that this original fight program has survived (especially after the madness that no doubt ensued following the fabled "long count"), and demonstrating such thoughtful preservation. This Official Heavyweight Championship keepsake displays a very unobtrusive pocket fold and understandable, age-induced cover faults. The interior, however, shows evidence of thoughtful preservation, and the 8-1/2" x 11-1/2" item retains about EX quality overall.
2) 9/22/1927 Tunney vs. Dempsey Full Proof Ticket - This rare proof piece (so identified by the absence of a printed seat assignment) exhibits all of the usual event information on the front side, and the reverse features an intricate and detailed Tunney/Dempsey embossed graphic. The 2-6/8" x 6-3/4" item displays four standard punch-cancellation holes, and extremely negligible peripheral faults are evident, but this nearly 80-year-old piece presents at the EX/MT level. These items were produced on a very limited basis to confirm details of the ducat's elaborate design.
More than 100,000 fight fans were on hand at venerable Soldier Field to witness the classic contest, which is considered today to be one of the biggest refereeing catastrophes in the history of sports. The offered pieces are very desirable memorabilia artifacts from that singular event.
