Just 13 seasons removed from a Philadelphia A's fire sale that resulted in seven successive cellar showings and 10 straight losing campaigns, the 1928 Mackmen again boasted of contention status. As late as September 9 of that summer, the Athletics held sole possession of first place before the defending champion Bronx Bombers were to ultimately prevail by a 2-1/2-game margin. Presented here is an OAL (Barnard) ball signed by 23 members of that revitalized A's club. The medium to dark-toned sphere features legible stampings and red-and-blue alternating laces. In black ink, the pennings project about "4-7" overall strength (with a few lesser). Included are: Bishop, Boley, Bush, Cobb ("5-6"), Collins ("4-5"), Earnshaw, Ehmke, Foxx ("5"), Grove ("4-5"), Haas, Hale, Hauser, Mack (Mgr, clubhouse), Miller, Orwoll, Powers, Quinn (sweet spot), Rommel, Simmons ("7"), Speaker (s/s, "5-6"), Walberg and two others. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA.
