Classic June 2007

Hovering within a game of the .500 mark as late as August 8, the 1948 Philadelphia Phillies sought to prevent a franchise-worst 16th successive losing campaign. While a 17-38 finish dashed those hopes, better fortunes were right around the corner, as the likes of Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts and Dick Sisler—all of whom debuted for the Phils in 1948—were to lead the club to an N.L. flag just two seasons later. Offered here is an ONL (Frick) ball signed by 19 members of the 1948 version. This clean and creamy sphere boasts vibrant stampings and black ink signatures that show "7-9" (mostly "8-9") strength. Included are: Ashburn, Bicknell, Blatnik, Donnelly, Ennis, Hamner (sweet spot, clubhouse), Heusser, Lakeman, Leonard, Miller, Nahem, Padgett, Porto, Rowell, Schultz, Seminick, Simmons, Sisler and Verban. We note that Robin Roberts does not appear on this keepsake, as he did not debut until June 18. With Howie Schultz' signature present, we conclude that the pennings were gathered sometime prior to May 24—the date on which Schultz was acquired by the Cincinnati Reds. LOA from Steve Grad & Zach Rullo/PSA DNA.
