If there were any doubts as to Peyton Manning's reputation as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, they were quickly erased following the 2006 regular season when Manning finally won the big one. Of course, even as a rookie, the University of Tennessee product showed signs of greatness, ranking third in the league in passing yards (3,739), fifth in passing touchdowns (26), and second in completions (326)—gaudy numbers for any single season performance, nonetheless a rookie. Proudly presented is an Indianapolis Colts road jersey that was worn by the standout helmsman during his impressive 1998 rookie campaign. Immediately, the eye is drawn to the jersey's phenomenal amount of wear. Manning gamers over the past four to five years rarely exhibit signs of use, so the fact that this example, a rookie issue at that, shows numeral puckering and tinges of sweat toning makes this item a truly singular find. On the back, the white mesh pullover garment displays "MANNING" spelled-out in blue tackle twill letters atop a white nameplate. The future Hall of Famer's number "18" is featured on the front, back and extended sleeves in like fashion, and the teams blue-white-and-blue stripe pattern adorns the shoulders. Both sleeves display the Logo Athletic "L" symbol, and the NFL shield logo is situated at the base of the collar. Stitched to the front left tail is a Logo Athletic/Pro Line strip tag with an accompanying flap tag revealing the jersey's size "50." A second strip tag bears the embossed number of the year in which the garment was employed, "98." From Peyton Manning's selection as the first overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft, to his mastery of the supposedly impenetrable Chicago Bears defense during Super Bowl XLI, induction into Canton appears to be Peyton's final destination when it's all said and done. This exceptional gamer represents the very beginning of the superstar's Hall of Fame career. Graded A-8 by MEARS. LOA from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and Lou Lampson.
Wednesday, August 29th MEARS contacted us and asked us to pull this jersey from the auction so they can perform further evaluation. A few days ago it was brought to our attention that concerns were expressed related to the font on the nameplate, specifically the "G". Since this time the Mastro Staff has researched font styles in order to find an appropriate exemplar. We did find a Rookie era Manning shirt that displayed the same style "G" and had impeccable provenance tying it to Manning. Unfortunately this was a blue home example, which we felt was inconclusive for validating this jersey. At this time we felt it appropriate to withdraw the jersey from the auction so MEARS, Lou Lampson and Mastro Auctions can finalize our evaluation.
