Graded 88 NM/MT 8 by SGC, one of just two copies at its tier. Only three specimens in SGC's census reporting merit higher assessment. In one of the few departures from the patterns set by its manufacturer's 1914 issue, this 1915 Cracker Jack card offers a breathtaking portrait likeness of its subject. Although the previous year's horizontal, "action" illustration of the Hall of Famer holds a unique place in collectors' hearts, the rendition seen here carries undeniable aesthetic merits of its own. A showpiece example, the offered card projects its flaming red-enhanced image from within an arrangement of barely toned white borders. The lavishly inked and beautifully detailed depiction of Mathewson possesses the strength of visual character to be complemented by its spectacular background, not overpowered by it. Thin-paper construction, a standard liability in the cherished Cracker Jack issues, has not succeeded in imperiling this exceptional piece's well-formed corners. As expected, its reverse displays bold, crisp print against a pure backdrop. By any standard, this is an extremely worthy Mathewson representative for the finest Hall of Fame assembly, in thoroughly impressive Near Mint to Mint condition.
