This Hamilton watch was presented to University of Notre Dame offensive line coach Wally Moore following the team's 1973 Sugar Bowl triumph. On its face, the timepiece reveals "SUGAR BOWL CLASSIC 1973" printed in blue lettering. Engraved on the reverse is "Notre Dame vs Alabama - W. Moore." This timepiece is still in working order, and shows only modest fading of the gold-plated material. In what would turn out to be one of the most exciting games in college bowl history, the 1973 Fighting Irish, led by head coach Ara Parseghian, met Paul "Bear" Bryant's Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl to decide which team was champion. Both clubs claimed the lead several times until 10:34 remained in the 4th quarter when Bob Thomas booted a 19-yard field goal to give Notre Dame a 24-23 edge the team never relinquished, and to secure the first undefeated and untied Notre Dame campaign since 1949! Coach Moore's contributions and dedication allowed Notre dame to roll up an average of 350 yards rushing per game, still an Irish record.
