Topps' 1952 series—the widely celebrated classic of the modern era—stands as a monumental achievement in design and creativity, and one of the most alluring prizes in our hobby is a presentable copy of the '52 Topps card featuring Brooklyn Dodgers outfielder Andy Pafko. Innumerable collections have been assembled—studded with immaculate representations in '52 Topps—but, invariably, they're introduced by a dubious Pafko card. Pafko's station as the first card in that venerated issue has brought about a perennially vexing frustration for the enthusiast. The vacuum of demand for this typically rubber-banded and heavily handled card simply can't be neutralized. But the offered example of this ultimate condition scarcity is ideally suited to fill the conspicuous shortcoming in one of the avocation's most prized, thoughtfully assembled 1952 Topps galleries.
Graded NM 7 by PSA. Among nearly 700 specimens holdered by that company, just five "Red Back" copies of this entry have achieved higher, unqualified PSA tiers. Few "number 1" cards from the post-war period are harder to find in top condition than the 1952 Topps Pafko. This example's technical imperfections are fundamentally limited to discreet corner touches that are slightly more noticeable than current industry standards. This was obviously an earlier graded example under less stringent PSA standards. The small discrepancies in that aspect are largely palliated, however, by the very desirable characteristics displayed elsewhere on this attractive piece. This Pafko collectible displays a smooth, unbroken gloss that has protected an absolutely gorgeous shade of blue in both Pafko’s hat and shirt lettering, and which has enabled all of the image's hues to show through exactly as photographed. The color contrast is superb, with Pafko’s face well-lit and clear, and the photo's registration is exact. The back is as clean and boldly-printed as one could envision. A suitable upgrade for all but the most advanced of the hobby's 1952 Topps sets!
