Classic February 2009
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on:
Human Torch #23 (Summer 1946) - CGC Universal Grade FN 6.0, with off-white to white pages (Schomburg cover and Thompson interior art; classic robot cover; Sub-Mariner story). This issue is listed in The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide as having a "Classic Schomburg Robot cover." In true Schomburg fashion the title's flaming hero is depicted as equal in size to the monstrous mechanoid, while a more realistically scaled Toro burns his way through the rooftop control tower for the lumbering metal giant. Colorful and incredibly detailed, Schomburg outdid himself on this one!
Captain America Comics #67 (7/48) - CGC Restored Grade FN- 5.5, with cream to off-white pages and slight professional restoration that includes a small amount of color touch on the cover and tear seals to the cover (cover and interior art by Shores, with additional interior art by Alascia; Golden Girl teams up with Cap; Toro's final appearance in the Human Torch stories; bondage cover; "Captain Tootsie" ad by C. C. Beck). The now-absent Bucky was seriously wounded in the previous issue and doesn't even get a mention here, while the heroine named Sun Girl takes over as Cap's permanent partner. This is also the last issue to feature Toro—goodbye kid sidekicks and hello sexy surrogates as Timely battles to keep their once-popular superhero titles in business!
