Hartland had two members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as part of their line at different times: Sgt. Lance O'Rourke and Sgt. Preston. Due to the fact that the sculpted likeness of Preston was not quite up to Hartland's usual high levels (and the fact that they didn't paint his trademark mustache), the two are much alike. Fortunately, Preston is the only one designed to hold a flag, making for easy identification. Offered here are both of Hartland's Mounties, each a high grade example. They look great standing together, as though they were part of a colorful parade.
Sgt. Lance O'Rourke, R. C. M. P. - Figure #804. Hartland's Sgt. O'Rourke was not tied to a licensed property, but the figure was undoubtedly kept in production to ride the surge of popularity stimulated by the Sgt. Preston of the Yukon TV show. O'Rourke was introduced to the line late in 1954 and replaced in the 1958 brochure by a newly licensed Sgt. Preston figure. This offered figure of O'Rourke appears NM, except for a thin line of rubbed paint on the inner side of each boot; he still has a NM example of the correct hat and his unique pistol that is still tied to the string accessory. The stalwart sergeant comes with a Chubby black horse with brown tack. This example of the horse grades only VG/EX, due to pronounced scrapes on both flanks, but it possesses an EX/MT example of the Mountie saddle and the original vinyl reins and cinch.
Sgt. Preston of the Yukon - Figure #804—the same catalog number as the O'Rourke figure that this set replaced. Sgt. Preston of the Yukon starred actor Richard Simmons as the sergeant. He ran as part of the Hartland line from 1958-61 and was the second of their two Mountie figures. This offering includes a NM figure and horse, with the horse displaying a touch of paint loss on the edges of his ears. A similar amount of wear also appears on the tips of the figure's spurs. The silk flag with its gilt-tipped, thin, black painted pole is EX/MT, due to the tiniest touch of fraying at one corner, but this set is made complete with NM examples of the Mountie saddle, the vinyl reins and cinch, the correct hat, and the unique pistol. It is a beautiful set, and one of the classics for the line.
