In 1902, Cincinnati's new "Palace of the Fans" ballpark was opened to great fanfare, and some of the city's associated promotional activity was generated on behalf of Joe Ehrman's upscale "Bismarck Cafe." The establishment's advertising focused on the prospect of the local Reds' success in 1903, and the concept was summarized in this rare pinback's central exhortation: "We'll Have the Pennant in 1903 ... Now Boys Root!!!" Greatness didn't materialize as anticipated for the local squad (the Reds went 74-65 in 1903—good enough for just 4th Place in the National League—under manager Joe Kelley), but the promotion yielded the creative, 1-3/4"-diameter cello survivor here presented. The piece shows light wear and age-toning, but reflects overall EX condition. A manufacturer's name, "Wm Helvig," is stamped inside the pin's back. A nearly impossible, regionally distributed relic!
